meetup: much fun had by all
I know, you’re probably kicking yourself for missing the latest mesh meetup — a social event aimed at poli-bloggers and various other hangers-on, fellow travelers, etc. that we had last night at the Charlotte Room. And so you should, because we had a great time without you
Liberal blogger Jason Cherniak showed up, as did Steve “Angry in the Great White North” Janke, and our good friend Andrew “call me Andrew” Coyne, who held court at the bar (as is his wont) until well into the evening.
We also had Mike “On the Attack” Brock– who has a new talk show called the Al and Mike Show — and many other luminaries, including Saleem and Kareem Khan, Leila Boujnane and her cohort from Idee, David “Troublemaker” Crow, Jevon MacDonald of Firestoker and a host of others (if you were there and I missed you, please let me know).
Obligatory mesh blurb:
mesh is only a few weeks away, and we have tons of great speakers and panels (see the full schedule here), and tickets are going quickly, so get in there and grab a few, etc. etc.

Reminder: mesh meetup on Wednesday
It’s only a few weeks until mesh — the full schedule of speakers and times is up, and there are still a few tickets left here, although they are going quickly — but there’s still time for one last mesh social event. So tomorrow night, we’re having a mesh meetup aimed at the political end of the Web 2.0 spectrum.
So if you want to hang with some other poli-bloggers and get revved up about the mesh panel with Andrew Coyne, Garth Turner, Phil de Vellis and Scott Feschuk — which will be looking at how the Web is changing politics — this is your chance. It starts at about 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Charlotte Room, which is near the intersection of King West and Spadina in Toronto. There’s more details and you can sign up at the Upcoming page.

mesh 2007 Meetup, Part Two – This Time, It’s Political
Come out with the mesh guys and get your political blog on, Toronto!
We had a great time at the first mesh meetup, but there are still a few weeks left to mesh ‘07 and we’d like to get together again. And this time, it’s political.
Blogger and National Post columnist Andrew Coyne, blogging M.P. Garth Turner, former Paul Martin speechwriter (and of late writer, humourist and blogger) Scott Feschuk and Phil de Vellis, the creator of the “Vote Different” Hillary ‘08 YouTube sensation, will be doing a panel at mesh ‘07 on what’s happening now with Politics and the Web, but let’s get the conversation started early!
Whether you’re a political blogger, party stalwart, consultant or media observer, or like us just plain fascinated by the impact that the Web is having on the way we discuss, organize and create political change, come on out and join us and folks from the Toronto Web 2.0 community on May 9 for snacks and libations at The Charlotte Room – details and signup at the Upcoming site, and please help to get the word out by forwarding this post to someone you can beat at eight-ball. Worst case, you can settle your political differences the way we were meant to – over libations and pool tables.

Thanks to all who meshed
Another great mesh meetup last night at the Charlotte Room, complete with plenty of beverages, snacks, pool tables and great conversation. Thanks to all who came — and especially to podcaster extraordinaire Leesa Barnes, who brought her podcasting bag of tricks and hopefully caught some great ideas being born amid all the meshing. Hopefully some photos will be making their way into various places — I know Rannie Turingan was taking some because I saw them on his Facebook group (it’s here if you are a Facebook user), and I saw Will Pate snapping some pics as well. If you have some photos and they’re at Flickr or Photobucket or whatever, just send me an email at mathew@mathewingram.com and I’ll link to them here — and if you have a blog post about it, feel free to do the same. Mark has some more details at Maple Leaf 2.0.

Come on out tonight and mesh
Spring seem to have hit Toronto with a bang, and that can only mean one thing: mesh is coming soon
And that means it must be time for the next mesh social event, which is on tonight at the Charlotte Room on King Street just east of Spadina. Come on out for some cold beverages, warm food and conversation, maybe a little nine-ball or Boston on the pool tables, and some all-around meshing.
We’re planning to get started at about 6 p.m. and keep it going until they make us go home, so be sure to drop by and join us. All the details and some of the attendees can be found at the Upcoming page.
Anyone who came to the last mesh meet-up at the Irish Embassy knows that it was a blast, with about 100 people showing up on a rainy November night, complete with guest appearances by Darren “Problogger†Rowse, all the way from Australia, as well as the guys from ConceptShare (all the way from Sudbury), and many of the usual suspects as well. Leesa Barnes did a great job conducting a bunch of podcast interviews with folks such as Dr. Tony Hung and Bernie Aho, and we’re hoping she’s going to do some more this time.

Time to mesh, Time to Mix
If you’ve got a bad case of the late-winter blahs, and looking for a little pick-you-up, how about a mesh meet-up? Yup, we’re going to gather again for some cold drinks, warm food and good conversation on March 28 at the Charlotte Room (King & Spadina), which bills itself as having “friendly staff, delicious food, an elegant yet cozy ambience and, of course, excellent pool playing facilities”. We’ll kick things off about 6 p.m. and keep it going until they make us go home! You can find all the details here.
The last mesh meet-up at the Irish Embassy was a lot of fun with more than 100 people showing up on a rainy November night, highlighted by a guest appearance by Darren “Problogger” Rowse, who flew in from Australia to join us. (Truth be told, he was here on business). Leesa Barnes did a great job conducting a bunch of podcast interviews with folks such as Dr. Tony Hung and Bernie Aho.

The mesh mini-podcasts are here
Anyone who attended the ridiculously successful mesh meetup on November 15th (blog post is here) at the Irish Embassy may have seen a woman with a small microphone interviewing various luminaries and other assorted folk. As some of you may know by now, that was podcaster extraordinaire Leesa Barnes, and the fruits of her labours are now available for all to enjoy.
That includes interviews with Dr. Tony Hung of Deep Jive Interests, blogger Juan Gonzalez of global-culture.org, Norman Young of The Talking Company (which is in stealth mode), new blogger Rob Schaumer and Bernie Aho of Conceptshare — and those are just the beginning. There are more to come. Thanks again to Leesa for all her hard work, and also for the compliments she bestowed on all of us in a recent post she wrote about mesh.
Podcasts were produced by Leesa’s company Caprica Interactive Marketing, with music from the Podsafe Music Network by Uncle Seth.
Here are the podcasts:
1. Juan Gonzalez of global-culture.org
[audio:http://www.cubicledivas.com/podcasts/mesh/meshconference-episode001.mp3]
Juan talks to Leesa about:
- Ways in which your online conversations can help you meet people in different countries
- Why Juan left Mexico to settle in Canada (and it wasn’t because of money)
- How to talk with your hands using your blog
2. Norman Young of The Talking Company
[audio:http://www.cubicledivas.com/podcasts/mesh/meshconference-episode002.mp3]
Norman talks to Leesa about:
- An idea Norman has for Mesh ‘07
- How to handle the misconceptions that mainstream audiences have over the word podcast (or should it be netcast?)
- Why the interactive space will never take the place of the physical space (the Mesh meetup is a perfect example)
[audio:http://www.cubicledivas.com/podcasts/mesh/meshconference-episode003.mp3]
Rob talks to Leesa about:
- His big challenge is and whether or not he can do it
- What he hopes to learn when he attends Mesh ‘07
- His 3 tips for staying young
- Advice on what to do if you’re interviewing someone really boring
4. Dr. Tony Hung of Deep Jive Interests
[audio:http://www.cubicledivas.com/podcasts/mesh/meshconference-episode004.mp3]
Tony talks to Leesa about:
- Whether Mathew Ingram looks better in person than he does online
- What Web 2.0 means
- Why he is excited about Mesh ‘07
[audio:http://www.cubicledivas.com/podcasts/mesh/meshconference-episode005.mp3]
Bernie talks to Leesa about:
- Why ConceptShare.com decided not to set up shop in Silicon Valley and chose Toronto instead
- How ConceptShare.com is building buzz without spending enormous sums on advertising
- How their biggest frustration sharing visual concepts over email turned into a business idea
- Web 2.0? It’s now time for Web 3.0
- Why Bernie would be part of the Mesh organizing team
- Which is colder – Sudbury or Toronto? Bernie settles the debate once and for all

Much more mesh!
Well, the mesh meetup is over, and it was a great party — lots of good food (thanks to our hosts at the Irish Embassy) and good conversation with the 100 or so people who came. It’s a good thing the Embassy had a little more space they could give us, because we were almost crowding the Bay Street types out at one point!
Thanks to everyone who showed up, and that includes the usual suspects — like Peter Dawson of ThoughtFlickr, Leila Boujnane of Idee Inc., Jim Courtney of Skype Journal, Michael O’Connor Clarke and Joe Thornley of Thornley Fallis, poli-blogger Andrew Coyne, the irrepressible Sacha Chua and too many others to name — and the new arrivals, including blogging star Tony Hung (sorry, that’s Dr. Tony Hung) of Deep Jive Interests, Scott Brooks of ConceptShare (who not only came early but brought his laptop), Maggie Fox of Social Media Group, Martin Cleaver from Helix Commerce and Darren Rowse of ProBlogger and b5media. Sheila Remtulla also came, and was glad that there were some other people who weren’t twenty-somethings
I know I’m missing a lot of people (only about 90 or so), so thanks again to everyone who came — and especially to Leesa Barnes, podcaster extraordinaire, who brought her gear and did some short interviews with people during the event, which we hope to have available soon. And anyone who was taking pictures (yes, I’m talking to you Leila and Sacha) if you could upload them to Flickr with the tag mesh07, that would be great.
Mark Evans has a post up on his blog about the meetup, as does Rob Hyndman. And Stuart MacDonald, the cheeky bugger, posted one during the event from his BlackBerry, just to show off
