mesh 2007 Meetup, Part Two – This Time, It’s Political
Come out with the mesh guys and get your political blog on, Toronto!
We had a great time at the first mesh meetup, but there are still a few weeks left to mesh ‘07 and we’d like to get together again. And this time, it’s political.
Blogger and National Post columnist Andrew Coyne, blogging M.P. Garth Turner, former Paul Martin speechwriter (and of late writer, humourist and blogger) Scott Feschuk and Phil de Vellis, the creator of the “Vote Different” Hillary ‘08 YouTube sensation, will be doing a panel at mesh ‘07 on what’s happening now with Politics and the Web, but let’s get the conversation started early!
Whether you’re a political blogger, party stalwart, consultant or media observer, or like us just plain fascinated by the impact that the Web is having on the way we discuss, organize and create political change, come on out and join us and folks from the Toronto Web 2.0 community on May 9 for snacks and libations at The Charlotte Room – details and signup at the Upcoming site, and please help to get the word out by forwarding this post to someone you can beat at eight-ball. Worst case, you can settle your political differences the way we were meant to – over libations and pool tables.

Although I am running an internet startup right now, my formal degree is in international political economics. One of my main focuses during my degree was on corruption and its use to control the populace. The internet is creating vast implications for tyrants around the world who in recent history have had a strong hold over the mainstream media. Journalists who talked negatively (or even not enough) about a leader (for example in Iran or in the PA under Arafats rule) would go missing or end up in jail; at best they would just be fired. These corrupt leaders who control the media in order to stay in power are loosing their strong-hold due to new forms of citizen journalism and media sharing. Although countries like Iran have blocked youtube, it is impossible to block every blog and a large number of internet users in these countries (especially Iran) are using proxies to go around these government blocks on certain sites. In summation the internet is having and will continue to have a vast effect on the domestic political situation of many countries. Corruption will be harder to cover and citizens will be able to see a true picture of what is actually happening around them.
Meet me on May 9 at the Charlotte Room in Toronto…
mesh 07 is going to include a panel on political blogging, but ahead of the May 30 conference, political bloggers are invited to The Charlotte Room to get the discussion started early….
[...] Posts have been few and far between these past few weeks…things are very busy at FreshBooks and I’ve been away for three of the last four weeks then down with the flu. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that we’re doing another mesh meet-up geared at the politics stream of mesh content. Here’s what Rob had to say on the mesh blog: Come out with the mesh guys and get your political blog on, Toronto! Agreed, David – it’s one of the most exciting aspects of how the Web is changing politics. We tried to get some Global Voices folks to mesh but couldn’t make it happen this year. Maybe next. BTW, related idea today at Boing Boing.
[...] It’s only a few weeks until mesh 2007 — you can find more info at the site, including the full schedule of speakers and times, and there are still a few tickets left here, although they are going quickly — but there’s still time for one last mesh social event. So tomorrow night, we’re having a mesh meetup aimed at the political end of the Web 2.0 spectrum. [...]

[...] That’s right, we’re having another meetup – and not just because we’re shamelessly creating an event for Stephen Harper, Stephane Dion, Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe to settle their differences over Guinness and eight ball. But more because we want to meet more political bloggers, and anyone else who, like us, is fascinated by the way the Web is transforming the way we discuss, organize and create political change. Details at the mesh blog and at the Upcoming site. Related Posts [...]
