get with the program

Things are flying among us today, as we work to get the finishing touches in place on the mesh content extravaganza. Big Progress Day today, with a couple of streams locked down, more Big Thinkers lined up, and much enthusiasm around how it’s all coming together. I’d say we are in good shape to have a program to share with you early next week.

Even we are being blown away by the talent. Thanks for your patience, and stay tuned…

torcampdemocamp 4.0 tonight

Reminder that this is on tonight over at the mesh home-to-be, MaRS. Details are here. I can’t make it, but hope that a lot of you do. And yes, I know they use upper case letters in their name. I’m just being mesh-y…

let’s confer

It could just be that because we are now organizing mesh we are hyper-sensitive to it (like how when you buy a red car, they are suddenly all you see) but it does seem that there is a lot of discussion on conferences, unconferences, camps, symposia – what have you – right now. For us, it has been especially challenging because we are the only ones working on this, we have never done it before, and the bar for conferencing in the web 2.0 world is seemingly almost impossible to meet. Why? Well, because events run the gamut from a small, super-informal meetup of like-minded folks to talk about what’s cool, up to 10,000 delegates with barcoded "Hi! My Name Is XXXXX" badges dangling from their necks. Problem is that everybody thinks that their way is just super-dee-duper. And we have our own ideas, too. So not easy to find the best way forward.

We spent much of Sunday afternoon talking about what we are hoping is going to be our Third Way – not a pure, casual, completely unstructured thing, but also not the type of seemingly canned event many of us have come to dislike. So what are we doing? Well, it’s not fully baked yet but here are some of the things:

Unconference room. One room at MaRS in the centre of the action, dedicated for folks to use as they will. Set up demos there, blog there, hang out there, strike up a conversation there, arrange a meetup there about a specific topic there. It’s yours – well, all of ours. We will keep the coffee hot and coming – you use it in a way that works for you. We are hoping to set up a wiki to allow for scheduling, but it’s basically all you to program. What do you think of that? Like it? Hate it? We’re trying – tell us.

Untraditional keynotes. We will be doing some as 1:1′s centre stage, with us just talking with some of our guests. No podium, no powerpoint. Just getting into it, hopefully in a smart way. We are working on how else to involve more people in the discussion, without making it turn into a goat rodeo. What say ye?

Workshops. We will be doing small group, nuts-and-bolts sessions with some top-drawer leaders. How do you like the concept?

We are still working on more – like the plumbing of this blog, for instance. And we aren’t done yet. But we wanted to tell you that we really are trying.

Update: Rob posts this morning on the tools we are using to get mesh going, and Mathew talks more about what we are trying to do.

letters, we get letters

Mathew has been ‘berry-ing away while on vacation in Florida this past while, and just got back to his home computer today. It seems that among the five of us, we sent him around 3,200 emails while he was out, as we have been pounding ahead with mesh.

Does that seem like a lot to you? Nah, me neither.

hotcakes – updated

Heads up to you post-secondary Student types out there. Our supply of ultra-low priced Student mesh tickets is already running low, so consider this fair warning. And we just started selling them two days ago. Wow.

As they say, book early to avoid dissapointment …

Update: That’s it folks. They came, they saw…and the Students bought. We are now sold out of Student tickets. Nice work to those of you who scored them. They would be what we refer to as a “deal”. :-)

CP24…everywhere…

David Onley just asked me to come on his show homepage to talk up mesh. It’s been a while since I’ve been on with David – great of him to ask.

welcome to mesh – updated

For those of you playing along at home, this post means that I am now officially blogging. Yep, it’s Post Number One, ever, for Yours Truly. Be gentle…

In talking with the guys, I thought that the best way to kick things off would be to let you in on the background to this little shin-dig. Some of you more intrepid business types might recognize this as the Consumer Insight, which, if we’ve nailed it and stay true to it, should mean we get the job done and those who come will be happy. Said another way? “Why Are We Doing This?” Here’s a tweaked version of what I wrote following the brewskie session that has become mesh:

There is all this buzz around Web 2.0. But what’s really happening, especially around here? Does anybody know? Can anybody help me understand it, and what it means for me? My business? My future? My family? My world?

mesh’s mandate will be to answer this question in as compelling, credible and authentic a way possible. Everything to do with the event will be around furthering that objective, and the content itself will serve to help mesh participants (not attendees :-) ) to really start to get it, this year and in years to come. We will create the Canadian forum for next generation Web ideas and leaders.

So that’s what mesh is. Well, no one will ever say we didn’t aim high ;-) But for that concept to become real, we need you. We need your enthusiasm, your sense of discovery, your talent and your support. Oh, and we need you to *come* and to *participate*. To meet each other, to move things forward, to get closer to the answer to What’s Going On?

We still want – no, need – your input. Much of what you’ve told us already is being baked into what we are doing. But we want to hear more. Bring it.

C’mon, why should all the cool stuff be happening Out There, or Down There? There’s no good reason. At all. Let’s lead this dang thing.

Let’s connect, share, inspire. Let’s mesh.

Update: As is mentioned below, the final program for the two days is still a work in progress. As you can see from these people, we are being blessed with great talent. We are working on even more. Once we have the final schedule nailed – in about 10 days or so – I will blog it and it will be made available on the site.

higher education

So you know how they say that education pays, (especially in Alberta, apparently ;-) )? Turns out they’re right – at least if you want to come to mesh.

We are making 30 tickets to mesh available to full-time post-secondary students, for the low, low, price of (drumroll please) …$25.

Nope, that’s not a typo – that’s twenty-five Canadian buckeroos… *including* GST. The catch? You have to show us a valid post-secondary student i.d. when you check-in at the event, or you don’t get in.

So, talk it up, tag it up, blog about it, tell your friends, and come, why don’t ya?
